Russia takes early lead at IBSA Blind Football Partially Sighted World Championships

Russia lines up before its match yesterday.2017 bronze medallists Russia have made a perfect start to the 2019 IBSA Blind Football Partially Sighted (B2/B3 categories) World Championships, winning its two first matches and shooting to the top of the table.

The championships bring together seven of the world's best teams and are hosted by GESFED, the Turkish Blind Sports Federation, in Antalya.

The Russian team has kicked off the tournament on a strong footing, defeating Spain 3-0 on Saturday before beating Japan 3-1 in yesterday's closing fixture.

Ukraine, the reigning champions, and 2017 silver medallists England both sit on three points, having played just one match each. England saw off Italy (4-2) on Saturday and rested yesterday, while Ukraine sat out the first match day and defeated the hosts 3-0 in yesterday's opening match.

Turkey and Spain are on three points apiece after two matches. The hosts opened with event with a close-fought 5-3 victory over Japan on Saturday and, after losing to Rusia on mach day one, Spain opened its account with a 5-1 win over Italy yesterday.

Today sees England take on Spain in the morning match, Russia and the Ukraine meet at 15:00 and Italy and Japan face each other at 18:00. The hosts have a rest day.

The teams will meet each other in a round-robin league first stage before moving on to the finals and placement matches on Saturday.
