Blind football in Hungary is taking off thanks to LASS (Visually Impaired Recreational Sports Association), a local sports organisation, and support from the IBSA Blind Football Development Project Europe.
Football for players with a visual impairment in Hungary has its roots in seminars for coaches and referees held in Budapest in March 2010, when locals and representatives from five other countries were introduced to the sport. The seminars were part of the previous European development project, funded through a grant from UEFA.
LASS took up the challenge in Hungary and began running regular training sessions in Autumn 2011, securing support from the Hungarian Football Federation. The LASS Budapest team has already taken part in several tournaments, including the first Blind Football Cup for Central European Cities in Prague in September 2013.
It is hoped Hungary will soon set up an official blind football national team to take part in international competitions.
